Slowdive - an oral history
The second label release from British label, Construct (OUT DECEMBER 8TH) is from London based producer, Hugo Barritt.
His bio (courtesy www.residentadvisor.net):
"Originally born in New Zealand, Hugo Barritt has been living in London for over a decade now embellishing the city as a playground for exploring his musical passions. During his time living in London, Hugo has co-promoted major club nights and played at some of the most influential underground parties the city had to offer. During the last few years Hugo has spent his time committed to the studio with impressive outcomes, beginning with three releases on Vitalik Recordings; the ´We Love Space´ compilation, the 'Merkaba EP', backed with remixes by Pezzner and Ethyl and the more notably the 'Kontrol EP', getting regular play time warming up the vibe for Circo loco at DC10.

The track is featured along side exclusive tracks and remixes from Jay Haze & Ricardo Villalobos, Mr Fingers, Huxley, Luke Solomon, Pezzner, William Kouam Djoko, Gavin Herlihy and Lil Mark among others."

Cut Copy has announced a new track from their upcoming album called "Free Your Mind." To hear the track, you must go to one of six locations in the world:
This is how it works:
Step one: travel to one of the six locations.
Step two: open their website on your iPhone or other smart phone.
Step three: your location is determined and verified, and the music for the new Cut Copy track will start playing.
My initial reaction was disappointment. I want to hear the song right now, as other fans surely do. The nearest location for me is Detroit (I'm in Brooklyn right now, a 10 hour drive away).
As I think more about how we listen to music in this day and age, perhaps this is a welcome change. By providing the music in a specific location, Cut Copy creates an experience and a focus for enjoying it, similar to the way that going to see a movie at the theater does for films. What do you think?

Live Stream Sigur Rós review, links to videos and more
To celebrate the release of kveikur, sigur rós will play played songs from the album live during a special 360 interactive webcast from Germany. Fans can interact with cameras and watch the show from whichever angle they want!
During a break from work, I was able to catch part of the live stream, and the interactive cameras were neat, but not totally seamless; whenever you switched cameras, there was a pause in the audio and video stream, which made the experience less than perfect. Still, the music sounded great, and it was exciting to be involved in the viewing experience from a screen. If you haven't had a chance to listen to the entire album, previews are available now on iTunes, Amazon, and on their website.

The Making of Screamadelica
Primal Scream began life as a teenage rock and roll band, like many other groups. Along the way, they discovered raves, samplers and dance music in the late-80's club scene, and the influence of their late-night experiences resulted in Screamadelica in 1991 (also see previous blog post about its 20th anniversary). A new documentary goes behind the scenes in the making of this seminal album, with insightful interviews with the members of Primal Scream, producer Andrew Weatherall, and Creation boss Alan McGee.
Like other documentaries in the Classic Albums series, some of the interviews are held in the original studios that the band recorded the music, with detailed breakdown of how the song originated, some of the happy accidents that led to a particular guitar part or sample, and what they were feeling at the time. The success of the album after its release and the subsequent tours, endless partying, and the surprising award of the Mercury Prize over U2 are now part of the larger than life story of one of the best albums ever made.

Keith Haring show at Brooklyn Museum
The Keith Haring show at Brooklyn Museum focused on his formative years from 1978-1982, which is when he was studying at SVA and when he started to develop the visual language that became the foundation of his future work. One wall featured the flyers from events he hosted, and in a smaller side room, the soundtrack of his youth played while you looked at photos from the time. I found the notebooks particularly fascinating. You can see his thoughts and ideas as a young artist, and start to understand how these ideas became the large paintings and murals in his later years.
Artist Spotlight: Dustin Wong
I knew what to expect, having heard his excellent album from 2010, Infinite Love, but the hypnotic guitar loops took on another dimension in the larger space. Halfway through his set, the music took an unexpected turn as he stood up from his assortment of delay pedals to play guitar - and sing. Dustin Wong will be releasing a brand new album on Thrill Jockey on February 21. Here is some background on Dustin:
"From Hawaii to Japan to the United States, Dustin Wong has had quite an episodic childhood; learning English and forgetting it as his family and he relocated to Japan at the age of two, having to re-learn English and joining a punk band in his early teens contrasting the oppressive conditions of Catholic school, Dustin surely went through some turmoil. In 2008 he started the quintet Ponytail with friends from art school. In 2010, after many performances and two albums worth of songs, the band announced their perfomance at Whartscape that year may be their last. The individual endeavors of the band’s members had led them to an indefinite hiatus. Since then Dustin has released 2009′s Seasons, a collection of ideas from 2002 to 2007 captured with just the internal mic on his laptop. In 2010, he released Let It Go, which pushed further the integration of technical guitar riffs with processed voice, drum, keyboard textures, and the limitless imagination of recording; finally Infinite Love the same year, which showcases a true representation of Dustin’s live performance built almost entirely of fast-paced guitar loops." new DJ store alert: sector
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of stumbling upon a recently opened record shop on 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn in the Gowanus area called sector. What caught my attention first were the toy figurines in the window display. Inside, there were bins for house, techno, new disco, and hip hop records on the wall. I wanted to stay longer, but since I had to run, I took a few snapshots to share:
Thurston Moore and Henry Rollins at McNally Jackson, NYC
If you haven't been keeping up with Henry Rollins recently, he's been traveling around the world documenting the people he meets with a backpack full of camera equipment. He recently spoke about his trips and how he got started with photography and his music career, with Thurston Moore acting as host. This was recorded at McNally Jackson Bookshop in lower Manhattan:
Superstar DJ Record Fair coming in October
Record fans rejoice! Brooklyn Flea's 4th annual Superstar DJ Record Fair is slated for Sat., Oct. 8, at the Smorgasburg food market on the W'burg waterfront. It will feature about 20 vintage record dealers, plus 20 vendors as part of the US debut of the Independent Label Market, a very cool London event that's expanding to Berlin in September, then making its US debut at our record fair in October. ILM features top labels from the world's best music cities, with the heads of those labels manning the booths, and there are some excellent/top labels already onboard for the Flea event.
Also tentatively planned are: a kids' disco component for the event; as well as album-cover face painting! And with all the food from Smorgasburg available, it's worth a visit for music fans and non-music fans alike.
If you would like to participate in this event as a dealer, send me an email and I'll forward it to the organizer. Table rates are reasonable, and the crowds should be insane.
