New tracks from Cut Copy

Cut Copy has announced a new track from their upcoming album called "Free Your Mind."  To hear the track, you must go to one of six locations in the world:

This is how it works:

Step one: travel to one of the six locations.
Step two: open their website on your iPhone or other smart phone.
Step three: your location is determined and verified, and the music for the new Cut Copy track will start playing.

My initial reaction was disappointment.  I want to hear the song right now, as other fans surely do.  The nearest location for me is Detroit (I'm in Brooklyn right now, a 10 hour drive away).

As I think more about how we listen to music in this day and age, perhaps this is a welcome change.  By providing the music in a specific location, Cut Copy creates an experience and a focus for enjoying it, similar to the way that going to see a movie at the theater does for films.  What do you think?

Unreleased Dylan Single to be released April 20th

Dylan fans: here is one reason to get to a local record store on April 20th...  I may have to get it for the cover alone.

New Fleet Foxes arriving May 3rd, playing in NYC

Fleet Foxes will be releasing a brand new album on May 3rd, 2011 called Helplessness Blues.

They'll also be playing in NYC at United Palace on May 18. Tickets go on sale Friday February 4th, and I expect it to sell out  show sold out in the first hour.

Princeton : 'Calypso Gold'

One of my favorite new tracks is this dreamy song, 'Calypso Gold' by Los Angeles-based band, Princeton. It has been available on their debut album on Kanine Records, and now the track will also be out on 7" (for all you 7" lovers) on January 25th.

"The band’s musical influences stretch just as wide, taking in everything from Something Else-era Kinks to Serge Gainsbourg, New Order, Arthur Russell, Scott Walker, Yo La Tengo and Gilberto Gil. While still rooted in the Baroque pop of their past work, Cocoon of Love sees the band explore new moods and styles, from the seductive, synth-driven Martina and Clive Krantz to the straight-up Stax-style soul of Show Some Love, When Your Man Gets Home."

NEW TORTOISE MP3 and VIDEO, upcoming show in NYC

After a long hiatus, Tortoise is back with a new album, Beacons of Ancestorship. It is Tortoise's sixth album, and the band's first since 2004's It's All Around You.

Here is the new video for Tortoise's "Prepare Your Coffin", a track from the new album which is coming out June 23rd.

Directed by Andrew Paynter and JUICE. Pitchfork calls the video, "A beautiful black-and-white meditation on death by-way-of symmetry, architecture, and photography. Meanwhile, the song kills."
