Yesterday, I had the pleasure of stumbling upon a recently opened record shop on 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn in the Gowanus area called sector. What caught my attention first were the toy figurines in the window display. Inside, there were bins for house, techno, new disco, and hip hop records on the wall. I wanted to stay longer, but since I had to run, I took a few snapshots to share:

Superstar DJ Record Fair coming in October

Record fans rejoice! Brooklyn Flea's 4th annual Superstar DJ Record Fair is slated for Sat., Oct. 8, at the Smorgasburg food market on the W'burg waterfront. It will feature about 20 vintage record dealers, plus 20 vendors as part of the US debut of the Independent Label Market, a very cool London event that's expanding to Berlin in September, then making its US debut at our record fair in October. ILM features top labels from the world's best music cities, with the heads of those labels manning the booths, and there are some excellent/top labels already onboard for the Flea event.

Also tentatively planned are: a kids' disco component for the event; as well as album-cover face painting! And with all the food from Smorgasburg available, it's worth a visit for music fans and non-music fans alike.

If you would like to participate in this event as a dealer, send me an email and I'll forward it to the organizer. Table rates are reasonable, and the crowds should be insane.

New Fleet Foxes arriving May 3rd, playing in NYC

Fleet Foxes will be releasing a brand new album on May 3rd, 2011 called Helplessness Blues.

They'll also be playing in NYC at United Palace on May 18. Tickets go on sale Friday February 4th, ~~and I expect it to sell out~~ show sold out in the first hour.

Screamadelica turns 20

Screamadelica has been recognized as a classic album from the 90's, but often overlooked is the role of DJ/producer, Andrew Weatherall. Weatherall took a British indie band, mixed in samples, brought in gospel singers, and gave them a new sound that had elements of house, dub, and psychedelic rock.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the release of the album, Primal Scream will perform the entire album live at The Olympia in West London on November 27 and 28, 2010. The performance is to include a full gospel choir for "Movin' on Up" and "Come Together" as well as a complete horn section.

A number of samples were used in the production of the album:

On the UK version of the album, "Come Together" opens with part of a speech given by Jesse Jackson at the Wattstax concert held in Los Angeles in 1972.
"Loaded" features lines spoken by Peter Fonda's character in the 1966 movie The Wild Angels, as well as a drum loop from an Italian bootleg mix of Edie Brickell's "What I Am".
"Slip Inside This House" features Sly Stone's laugh from the end of the song "Sex Machine" (from the 1969 album Stand!) and the Amen break.
"Inner Flight" samples the closing sound on Brian Eno's "The Great Pretender" from the album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy).
"Higher Than the Sun" uses a sample from "Wah Wah Man" by the Young-Holt Unlimited Trio.
"Movin' on Up" does not sample but borrows from the lyrics to Can's "Yoo Doo Right".

Revisiting My Way by Akufen

Going through my dance records recently I came across a vinyl copy of Akufen's full-length from 2002 entitled My Way. I remember how much I loved listening to it when it came out, but since then I haven't given it much of a listen. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it has held up:

"Microsampling – Every morning when I wake up, it's become customary for me to surf the airwaves on both my tuners and shortwave receivers. (...) All that we hear on the air is dead within a few seconds. (...) I attempt to give new life to dead airwaves on the very moment of their short existence. (...) Princeton : 'Calypso Gold'

One of my favorite new tracks is this dreamy song, 'Calypso Gold' by Los Angeles-based band, Princeton. It has been available on their debut album on Kanine Records, and now the track will also be out on 7" (for all you 7" lovers) on January 25th.

"The band’s musical influences stretch just as wide, taking in everything from Something Else-era Kinks to Serge Gainsbourg, New Order, Arthur Russell, Scott Walker, Yo La Tengo and Gilberto Gil. While still rooted in the Baroque pop of their past work, Cocoon of Love sees the band explore new moods and styles, from the seductive, synth-driven Martina and Clive Krantz to the straight-up Stax-style soul of Show Some Love, When Your Man Gets Home."

There's a local-run website devoted to vinyl lovers, and I recently had the pleasure of talking with them about Etherea: Analog Apartment. BTW, the OLD RARE NEW sign on the back wall inspired the title of a documentary book about record stores by Emma Pettit, who interviewed me for it, and included some photos of Etherea inside. The sign was found on the street in front of my store one night after closing, but I believe it may have been made by The Strand Bookstore in Manhattan. Anyone recognize it? You can find the book online

BEASTIE BOYS TOUR DATES CANCELED, ALBUM RELEASE POSTPONED ADAM YAUCH DIAGNOSED WITH PAROTID GLAND TUMOR. Adam "MCA" Yauch of Beastie Boys was diagnosed last week as having a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. Luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable. It will however require surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. Fortunately the cancer is not in a location that will affect Yauch's vocal chords. Beastie Boys have canceled all upcoming concert appearances to allow time for Yauch's surgery and recovery. The release of the band's forthcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 will also be pushed back. Paraphrasing from a video statement on Beastieboys.com , Yauch said, "I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we'll release the record and play some shows. It's a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because i was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later."

New Iron and Wine Rarities Comp Announced

Usually, the collection of B-sides, unreleased tracks, and demos by an artist would be for fans only. In the case of Iron and Wine, you might well call this a proper album - these songs not only stand on their own, but as you listen over the span of the double-disc/triple-LP set, there is a cohesion of style (spare, acoustic) and substance that had also helped to define the earlier Iron and Wine catalog.

Collecting songs ranging from out-of-print to never-before-released, Around the Well spans Iron and Wine’s earliest sessions which yielded the band’s debut (2002’s The Creek Drank the Cradle) through material recorded for 2007’s The Shepherd’s Dog. The double-disc Around the Well collection is broken up into two sections. The first half is an assortment of hushed home recordings, unedited and raw, and the second highlights moments captured in the confines of proper studios with the help of other musicians, friends and engineers.

The album’s title comes from a line in the song “The Trapeze Swinger,” a fan favorite which was written for and included in the 2004 movie In Good Company. Three more songs written and recorded for the film finally make their appearance here as well: “Belated Promise Ring,” “God Made the Automobile” and “Homeward, These Shoes.” Around the Well also brings together hard-to-find covers such as The Flaming Lips’ “Waitin’ for a Superman” and New Order’s “Love Vigilantes,” along with one of Iron and Wine’s earliest originals, “Sacred Vision.” In support of Around the Well, this May Iron and Wine will perform ten intimate shows in five cities. In addition, Iron and Wine have begun work on the follow-up to The Shepherd’s Dog and plan to release a new album in spring, 2010.

It's been a while since my last update, and there have been some new developments to report. While Etherea the retail shop is no longer, I have set up a new office in Dumbo, Brooklyn. I'll be organizing records and cds there, and selling online and at flea markets; more on that soon. Keep you eyes on this site, and I will let you know when and where my first Brooklyn sale will be. I can guarantee lots of fresh stock out of storage, LOTS of rare 45s, LPs, and CDs that have not seen the light of day in quite some time!

Many of you have been bewildered by the blogging that has been going on about the closing of Etherea (specifically the Brooklyn Vegan post about Etherea being "saved"). Well, here's the real story. My lease here on Avenue A is over. Etherea the shop on AVE A is now officially closed. One of my employees, namely DJ Brion, decided he wanted to buy out my store when I told him I was closing and start his own record shop in same location with a new partner, but sadly, this has fallen through. He is not planning a new store on Ave A or anywhere else for that matter.

After 13 and 1/2 years, my record shop, etherea, is closing for good at the end of February. It's been a great journey for me, and I feel grateful to everyone who has contributed to making it a success. Squarepusher : Just a Souvenir CD/LP on sale now!

“This album started as a daydream about watching a crazy, beautiful rock band play an ultra-gig.

At first, a giant fluorescent image of a coat hanger appeared at the back of the stage. A couple of seconds later a full size replica of the Camden Falcon backroom materialised around the glowing coat hanger. Upon the stage was a group composed of five musicians. They seemed to be of differing ages, some young, some old. I noticed that the drummer was an Eskimo. They played instruments either of their own design or conventional ones that were modified such that they could be used to generate a range of sounds not typically associated with a rock band. For instance, one of the musicians appeared to be using a device attached to the body of his classical guitar that allowed him to accelerate or decelerate time in his immediate vicinity. At a certain point he seemed to quickly reverse back to a couple of months ago. My suspicions were corroborated by his hair and beard temporarily looking rather shorter. Sonically, this had the effect of extruding certain melodic phrases into shimmering monoliths and slow emotion wave fronts. Other sounds being generated near to him on stage also got partially sucked into the time sponge and were returned at high speed as imploded sonic pin cushions.

The coat hanger started glowing emerald green. At the same time, a river emerged on the stage and appeared to be running under the drum kit. I was concerned for the safety of the musicians being as it was that they were powering their other-worldly equipment with electricity. Just as I began to venture a comment, the members of the band that weren’t kayaking were enveloped in a localised electrical storm. As the electricity arced around various nodal points such as the drummer’s left hand, the guitarist’s teeth and a Venus fly trap that was sitting just behind the bass amp, I noticed to my relief that they weren’t being incinerated by this high voltage extravaganza. No, but it did seem to have the effect of generating a bass -distortion that sounded as if the bass guitar was actually a RSJ being played with a chainsaw, enclosed in a ventilated cabinet of fine mahogany. In fact, the high voltage was smash-mapping the bass line to a lightning wave and then amplifying it millions of times over. The bassist was now using the entire building as a speaker.

My vision at this stage was hence somewhat blurred, but I am sure I saw all of the drums in the drummer’s kit rapidly exchanging places with one another. The snare drum would occasionally rocket to the ceiling and hover there for minutes at a time, oscillating at rates factorially related to the tempo. Thus it started to act as a receiver for electromagnetic radiation emitted by nearby neutron stars. The strange lonely songs of astral bodies echoed about the room as their electromagnetic radiation was demodulated by the UHF calf skin. Then it exploded, showering the band in pieces of plywood.

It was at this stage that my attention was switched to the electric guitar player. Splinters of detonated snare drum were striking the strings of his guitar such that his right hand was free to operate a cupboard full of granite spheres illuminated in a dull orange. As he did, his person rapidly fragmented into various historical stages of mankind. For example, there was a Cro-Magnon man and a Homo Erectus playing Monopoly. The Cro-Magnon appeared to be winning. Suddenly the Cro-Magnon was in a headlock. Suddenly everyone in the room was incredibly happy. Riffs of medieval joy bloomed about the small man as he struggled to fight back tears of elation. They were happy because they were real. They were smoking because they were real. The coat hanger winked out, they thanked me and left forthwith leaving no trace save a small dent where a pantechnicon lorry had smashed through the back wall of the stage to deliver a replacement snare drum.

What to do after an experience of that order? As the room around me regained its familiar shape, I was left with an urgent sense of responsibility that I do honour to this vision of a remarkable ensemble. My memory of it was the only souvenir, and I feared its vulnerability with only a skull to protect it. I ventured forth to the studio shortly after the New Year. I emerged on July 15th. Hatchback : Colors of the Sun (Lo Recordings) "One half of Windsurf, the duo on Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label, Samuel Milton Grawe goes solo with more great cosmic disco sounds as Hatchback. An array of vintage synthesizers, analog drum machines, and the venerable Fender Rhodes electric piano create classic sounds with a modern twist. If Dennis Wilson was still alive, he'd be making music like this."

Michna : Magic Monday (Ghostly) NYC DJ/producer, Adrian Michna, formerly of Secret Frequency Crew comes out big with his first solo album. "Apart from the tightly woven musical amalgam of hip-hop, booty and electro, it’s the detailed process that makes Michna’s debut album, Magic Monday, move. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the album is its rich element of musicality; in an era when hip-hop tracks have devolved into two-note keyboard loops, songs like “Skunk Walk” live up to their name with full-bodied funk and live horns."

Morgan Geist : Double Night Time (Environ) "Double Night Time is the new album from Morgan Geist and his first solo artist album in over a decade. Instrumentally, the orchestra Geist employs is decidedly more Yellow Magic than philharmonic: unlike his Metro Area project or the disco music he DJs all over the world, a conscious decision was made to design an album that was almost purely electronic outside of human vocals, with classic synthetic sound design and arrangements. Geist wanted Double Night Time to be the sound of one person making music in a studio, programming a private world, recapturing the lonely and romantic sentiments associated with his formative music-making experiences."

Milosh : III (Plug Research) "Milosh (Toronto, Canada) makes music for the mind, body and spirit. Introspective, intimate, sensual electro-folk steeped in perfumed melancholy and luscious romance. Combining beats, samples, guitars, strings and the most silken falsetto voice since prime-time Smokey Robinson, the third Milosh album iii takes the listener on an emotional journey through an exquisitely beautiful musical landscape. A classically trained cellist, jazz aficionado, Neil Young fan and devotee of left-field electronica, the Toronto-based Michael Milosh does not fit conventional pop categories - and nor does his music."

We recently purchased a large collection of records from a NY deejay this morning, about 2500 pieces of house, tech, disco, EDM, jazzy, freestyle, etc. Mostly 90's to 2005, mostly 12" singles, some albums. Some hip hop, and a lot of rarities and classics in excellent condition. SOME of it is now priced, but you are welcome to take a look, listen on the turntable, and we'll price them up as you pull, and give you a discount if you are purchasing over $100. Shearwater to premiere new material May 5th

On Monday, May 5th, Shearwater will premiere "Rook" in a special concert at the beautiful Florence Gould Concert Hall at Manhattan’s French Institute.

For this event, Shearwater will be joined by a string quartet, woodwinds, trumpets, and a harpist, and will play the new album, "Rook", in its entirety, along with a set of older songs.

The New York show will begin with a solo performance by the legendary Michael Gira (Swans, Angels of Light), and will also feature projections by Kahn & Selesnick, the team behind Rook’s cover art.

Tickets to this event are limited. For New York (May 5), they are available from Ticketmaster, starting Friday, April 11 at 10am.

Chan Marshall comes out with a second album of covers, this Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008; this one's a tribute to the great vocalists who've influenced her over the years, backed by a full band of indie all-stars. Magnetic Fields to release new album in January 2008

Stephin Merritt and company have finished their long-awaited full-length, Distortion. Scheduled for a January 15th release, the album features 13 new songs. Like previous efforts, vocal duties are handled by by Mr. Merritt and drummer Claudia Gonson. Sonic distortion is applied on many different instruments, carefully layered in the background behind the vocals, creating a hazy pop feel that recalls the Jesus and Mary Chain, while retaining a hum-able pop feel throughout.

This weekend, as part of something called the "Gibson/Baldwin Jazz Festival" (as in Gibson Guitars and Baldwin Pianos), multi-instrumental jazz great Yusef Lateef will appear at the Whole Foods store on East Houston Street @ Bowery.

Beginning at 2:00pm, Dr. Lateef will be signing copies of his new book, The Gentle Giant: The Autobiography of Yusef Lateef. At 3:00pm, trumpeter Ted Curson and the Spirit of Life Ensemble will perform with Yusef as their special guest.

The Gibson/Baldwin Jazz Festival is free and open to the public.

After the fairly scattershot approach of "Hail To The Thief" and extreme introspection of Yorke's solo "Eraser", it's pretty awe-inspiring to hear the group in expansive mode again, creating an album that keeps their emotional core inact while pushing the boundaries of their sound outward.

The initial impression given by the album (and one that stays after listening repeatedly) is a band at the peak of their powers. From the moment the first song starts, it's clear that there's nothing tentative going on here. We're up to full speed within seconds, kids cheer, the beats hit you square in the gut, Thom Yorke begins to jabber in his inimitable fashion, and it's recognizably paranoid skittish Radiohead, but looser and fiercer and funkier all at once.

There's all the expected pretty Radiohead moments but not neccesarily in the places you expect. There's weird percussive things. And big guitar roars and little piano noises and slightly computerized jittery things that melt into a soaring melody so seamlessly that you never really stop to think about the transition.

In short, In Rainbows manages to showcase all of Radiohead's strengths and use them as a foundation for something fresh and new. Once again.
